a little late

If you attended Alex's first birthday party, you know that he wanted nothing to do with his cake. I tried to let him put his hands on it, but he wouldn't dig into the cake for whatever reason. Yesterday, our neighbor invited us over for cupcakes. Her granddaughter is spending the next five days with her so she bought cupcakes for her. Alex decided that he was going to get his hands into those pretty cupcakes. They were super cute - decorated in blue and green icing. In fact, he ate 2 of them. One without icing. After he smeared his hands in the icing of the first one.

'shroom

While out with Alex earlier today, I saw this huge mushroom in our front yard. I didn't know we had mushrooms in our yard. I didn't want to touch it because I didn't know if it was poisonous or not.

little girls

I bought this adorable outfit for our friends who had a baby girl last week. So cute. This is why I wanted (and still want) a girl. In retrospect, I am glad that I had a boy first because as a child who had only sisters growing up and is the oldest of three, I always wanted an older brother to look after me. So if all goes as I hope it does, we will have a girl next so that Alex has a little sister to protect.

a fountain of my very own

We spent this Memorial Day letting Alex play with the new toy that Chris bought. A baby pool with it's own sprinkler system. :0) Chris knows how much Alex loves the Pop-jet fountains at Bridge Street (and just water in general) so he really wanted Alex to have this after we saw it in a magazine. He loved it!

puppy love

Alex has been loving stuffed animals lately. This is my dalmation that I love and have had forever. I only let him carry it around the house. For the past couple weeks, though, he has been going to sleep with Winnie the Pooh. I'll give him his Pooh bear, lay him in his crib and he'll roll over and go to sleep. So cute.

manual labor

I wanted to prove to Chris that I was perfectly capable of mowing the lawn if need be. So this morning, he left half of the backyard for me to mow. Besides starting the push mower, it was fairly easy. And tiring at the same time. RC, one of the horse owners that we've become friends with, came over and asked if I was doing some on the job training. I just laughed and explained to him that I was trying to prove a point.

welcome to my kindgom

Kids Kingdom, that is. I took Alex to the park this morning to enjoy the beautiful weather we had today. It was a bit crowded and Alex insisted on playing with the older kids, but it was fun nonetheless. Afterwards, we met up with Chris for lunch at Zaxby's. Now, I'm enjoying peace and quiet in the house while Alex naps. Time to catch up on chores.

last one

This is the only pacifier that Alex has left. I refuse to buy him anymore pacifiers and/or leash thingy's that you attach to the child. They are seriously inhibiting him from talking. So once we lose this one, no more pacifiers in this house. I'll tell Alex that they went to paci heaven.

ra-ra-ra for rocket!

Chris is a member of IEEE, which has it's perks. Today, we were invited to the Space and Rocket Center for lunch and the robotics competition. The entire time we were there I had the song from Little Einsteins in my head. We obviously watch too much of that around here. It ended up being more fun that I thought it would be, but I'm exhausted since I had to wake up early to make sure I could get Alex registered for swim lessons. I didn't want to get there and the class ended up being full already. Luckily, we got in. I see a lot of registrations in our future - for swim, soccer, music, etc.

water works

It was actually nice outside today. So I decided to go to Bridge Street with Alex to get some retail therapy, as well as let him play in the pop-jet fountains. He was a little skeptical at first. We sat on a bench just far enough so we wouldn't get drops of water on us. Then, he wanted down and started inching his way closer to the fountains. All this time, he's going "ooh" and "aah." He loves water so I knew it would be a matter of seconds before he realized that I was actually going to let him play. So I moved our stuff as close as I could to the fountains without getting wet. Finally, Alex went right up to one of the streams and stuck his hands over it. He loved it!

ouch!

Alex fell asleep by 6pm last night. This is the 2nd Sunday in a row that he's done this. However, he fell asleep while watching Baby Einstein - like this. Chris and I wonder how comfortable it can be to sleep like this? Honestly. Everytime Chris finds him in his crib sleepling in this position, he rolls him onto his side or onto his back. I don't even bother. Alex will find some way to sleep like this. Usually I see him with his head in the corner. I know I shouldn't laugh, but it's funny to see him like this.

mama's day

Happy Mother's Day to all my mama and mama-to-be friends! I got this cute little boy pendant and necklace to celebrate with my first child. I didn't use a flash for this picture so the quality is not that great.

drama free day

No swine flu, no tornadoes, no rain. It was drama free today. Well, except for the fact that Alex decided to play in the mud right before we left the park today. Thank goodness mama was prepared and brought more clothes in the backpack. It was a great day at the park with friends.

spoiled rockin' kid

I took Alex for his 2nd hair cut yesterday. I decided to take him to the new kid's salon on the other side of town... they exceeded my expectations! For his very first hair cut, I took him to this men's grooming salon (because the kid's one wasn't open yet). The lady cut his hair and did an okay job, but when Alex started getting fussy she didn't want to try to cut anymore. Needless to say, he needed a hair cut two weeks later, but he didn't get one until yesterday. It was well worth the money I paid.

The ladies at this place deal with kids all the time so they had the patience to deal with his meltdown. They were also quite impressed with me, as I let him have his tantrum and continued to let them cut his hair. They said that a lot of moms come in and when the meltdown starts say that they will try again next week. News flash: same thing might happen again next week, next month, next year. There is no point in waiting. I just wanted to get his hair cut and over with. He was in desperate need of one and so am I. Mine will have to wait until next week, though.

Remember this chair... well Alex can get into it himself now. And he loves "reading" books. He can turn the pages (because that's what Chris and I do) and follows the words with his fingers, but that's about it. It's amusing to watch him "read" books because he acts like he knows what he's doing.

The sun came out today - after days and days of dreariness. Alex has been itching to run around in the yard... so I let him. For a little while. He went wild.

spec-tacular

What does one do on a dreary Saturday? Look for new glasses, of course! Chris is still skeptical of Alex being out in public with 3 cases of swine flu just minutes away from us (whereas I think he'll be okay) so I went out to search for new glasses. My opthamologist said I really don't need a new pair since my vision will be stable for a good long while, but with a 14 month old, I need an extra pair in case anything happens to them. Not very many places are willing to take on my high prescription, and not wanting to pay $500 at the opthamologist's little place, I went to Wal-Mart. I took my camera with me so I could see what they look like on my face. Here was one of my choices. Keep in mind that I am literally blind without corrective lenses so my pictures were not the greatest. Oh well. Not too exciting, I know. And now that I think of it, I don't even remember which pair I finally picked. I guess I'll be surprised in a week.

damn pigs

So with everything that has been in the media about swine flu recently, I decided to consult my friend who works for the CDC about this pandemic. Although he doesn't work there anymore, he works for the Carter Center, but that's completely irrelevant.

Here is what he says, "for the past 4 years, our federal, state and local health departments have planned, implemented and tested epidemic preparedness and response systems. these systems are in place and ready to be activated if needed. more people die of typical strains of influenza each year than this new strain. also, it seems as if the virus has converted to a milder form as what was reported in MX. Infectious diseases should selectively become milder if they want to exist. Killing your host shortens your own life span. The media has blown this out of proportion and therefore people live in fear. Wash your hands and cough/sneeze into your sleeve. "
